Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) develop in the jawbones from approximately age twelve and try to erupt at age eighteen. Although most people have four wisdom teeth (two upper and two lower ones) 10% of all people do not develop all of their wisdom teeth.

In most people, wisdom teeth become an issue when there is not enough room in the rear of the jaws for the wisdom teeth to fully erupt and be functional. When wisdom teeth become stuck and cannot fully emerge to their correct position, the tooth is referred to as “impacted”.

Some of the problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth include: bacteria and plaque build-up, cysts development, tumour development, infection and jaw and gum disease.

Our dentists will often recommend the removal of wisdom teeth, as early extraction can prevent future problems.
